Weekly Outflow Breaks Three-Week Streak

U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs recorded a $21.13 million net inflow on October 9, according to data from Trader T. BlackRock's IBIT pulled $22.38 million and VanEck's HODL added $2.33 million, while Fidelity's FBTC posted a $3.58 million outflow. The single-day figure appeared across crypto outlets as a positive headline.

That same day closed a week in which the same funds lost $681.10 million. Fidelity led withdrawals with $380.36 million pulled from FBTC over five trading days, its largest weekly exit on record. ARK 21Shares' ARKB saw $207.21 million leave. BlackRock managed a $1.02 million weekly gain, the only fund in positive territory.

The reversal ended a three-week run during which bitcoin ETFs had drawn nearly $2.4 billion in new capital. Weekly outflows of this size have not appeared since early September, when the funds posted consecutive withdrawal weeks before recovering in late September and early October.

Daily Headlines Obscured the Trend

Multiple outlets ran the October 9 inflow as their lead figure without noting it sat inside a much larger weekly decline. The $21 million gain represents 3% of the week's $681 million loss, yet the positive single-day number dominated coverage.

This pattern has appeared before. In early October, a $96 million daily inflow was headlined immediately after a $2.4 billion weekly peak, masking the sharp drop in momentum. Analysts noted at the time that sequential weekly comparisons offer a clearer view of institutional demand than isolated daily snapshots.

The shift follows Bitcoin's decline to October lows on the same day the weekly outflow period ended. Open interest in Bitcoin futures has climbed back to levels last seen before a September correction, raising concerns about borrowed positions accumulating again as spot ETF buyers pull back.

Institutional Caution Returns

The size of Fidelity's withdrawal suggests institutional clients, not retail, drove the week's exits. FBTC holds over $11 billion in assets, making a $380 million weekly outflow a 3.5% reduction in a short period. ARK's near-$207 million exit from a smaller base represents an even steeper percentage decline.

Large banks and asset managers have shown mixed ETF appetite this year. Some institutions sold their Q2 holdings while others added, creating uneven flows that have defined 2026 ETF performance. The latest week's outflows suggest caution is spreading as Bitcoin's price remains volatile and regulatory clarity on crypto products stays uncertain heading into the final quarter.
