Several crypto trackers have circled August 9 as the day Cardano ETF eligibility finally arrives. The reasoning is tidy. CME Group listed ADA futures on February 9, the SEC's generic listing standards ask for six months of futures trading, so six months later the gate swings open. It does not survive contact with the rule it claims to be quoting.
That standard, approved on September 17, 2025 and published as Release No. 34-103995, asks that the commodity underlie a futures contract "made available to trade on a designated contract market for at least six months." A designated contract market is any board of trade registered under the Commodity Exchange Act and supervised by the CFTC. CME is one. It is not the only one.
Coinbase started the Cardano clock in March 2025
Coinbase Derivatives holds the same CFTC designation, and it self-certified ADA futures ahead of a March 31, 2025 launch. Count six months forward and you land at the end of September 2025, two weeks after the SEC signed the generic standards into effect. Read the rule as written and the Cardano ETF gate opened last autumn.
A second condition exists. The listing exchange needs a surveillance sharing agreement with the venue carrying those futures, directly or through shared membership in the Intermarket Surveillance Group. Argue about that one. The six-month count is arithmetic.
Chainlink already ran this experiment in public
Bitwise listed its spot Chainlink fund, CLNK, on NYSE Arca on January 14, 2026, at a 0.34% fee with three months waived on the first $500 million. CME did not list a LINK future until February 9, twenty-six days later. Litecoin and Hedera make the point earlier. Canary Capital took both onto Nasdaq in late October 2025, during a government shutdown, and neither had CME futures at all. Goldman Sachs was clearing altcoin ETFs for clients in that stretch, and the money followed, with HYPE products taking in $100 million in a month.
| Asset | First US spot ETF | CME futures listed |
|---|---|---|
| Litecoin | Nasdaq, late October 2025 | None at launch |
| Hedera | Nasdaq, late October 2025 | None at launch |
| Chainlink | NYSE Arca, January 14, 2026 | February 9, 2026 |
| Cardano | Not yet | February 9, 2026 |
Something else is holding Grayscale up
CME's January 15 press release put ADA, LINK and Stellar futures on one February 9 start line, with a 100,000 ADA contract and a 10,000 ADA micro. The exchange has spent the year fighting venue battles elsewhere.
Grayscale's Cardano ETF has been stuck since the autumn shutdown, when its proposal passed a deadline without an update while rivals shipped anyway. Trackers now put the SEC decision at October 23 or October 26 depending which you read, and that gap shows how much of this timeline is copied rather than checked. What is in the way looks like paperwork and effectiveness dates, the plumbing that also governs reverse splits at funds already trading, while the SEC's Reg Crypto package works through publication.
Sunday will pass. The thing to watch after it is whether an S-1 goes effective, because that document stands between ADA and a ticker. Anyone trading the Cardano ETF date on August 9 is trading a calendar entry CLNK made redundant in January.
